Tivo coming back to Directv

By populuxe
Readers of this blog will remember my post a while back about how Directv was trying to take my Tivo. At the time, I said "You'll take my TiVo when you pry my cold dead fingers off the oh-so-friendly TiVo button."

Eventually, the called my bluff and forced me to switch when they shut off the MPEG-2 broadcasts. So I got one of their Directtv DVRs. I hated it and
flamed it on this blog.

Now news comes that Directv has finally relented and is going to let us have Tivos again...in the second half of next year. Thank you assholes. No time like a year from now I guess.

In the meantime, my position on the Directv DVR has moderated a bit. There are a few things I actually like. I like the picture in picture when browsing menus. Much better than having to interrupt your show to search for something. I like one-touch season passes right from the remote. And I like overall the way that there are way fewer screens than on Tivo. My big Tivo pet peeve is too many screens for simple things. And conflict resolution is way, way better on the DVR. Tivo sucks in this regard. You have to root through all your shows and manually correct conflicts. The DVR says "hey, there's a conflict, you want to cancel show A or show B?" Much better.

But the positives do not make up for the substantial negatives. Too many confusing buttons on the remote. And useless ones too. Thank Rupert for giving us a Sky remote for no reason. And the menus are sloooow. Fast forwarding and rewinding is not very accurate and you might as well watch the commercials by the time you are done. And did I mention the ridiculous 50 show season pass limit? Why, I still have no idea.

So, yes, I will be getting my Tivo back. But please Tivo, fix conflict resolution on this new box. Its just embarrassing.
