Speaking of Blu-Ray, how about 3D
We've been talking about Blu-Ray here at Populuxe, but so on a related note....
Panasonic just unveiled their full HD plasma and Blu-Ray solution. This is a huge achievement if it works as promised. Until now, all the solutions have required either interlacing the stereo pair, which cuts the resolution in half, or squeezing the left and right eye side by side on the screen and then having the glasses make a complete image which also cuts horizontal resolution. I am not completely clear on how Pana's solution works, but I believe based on what I have read that it has a really high frame rate - probably along the lines of the Real D system in theaters - that gives something like 60 frames per second per eye at full resolution so you do not have to compromise the image but you don't perceive the flicker.
The big issue of course is that plasma is losing in the market to LCD. But perhaps Pana has found a way to make it competitive. The question is will the studios support these displays with content. If they are smart they will. I think it makes Blu-Ray more valuable as a format because no way are you doing this on DVD.
